Saint Pius X Catholic Parish, dedicated to renewing all things in Christ, is committed to evangelization through prayer, service, sacrificial giving, faith formation and community.
We celebrate and embrace the traditions of the Catholic faith centered on the Eucharist, inspiring our community to grow spiritually through the liturgy, the sacraments and many forms of personal and communal prayer.
We discern our gifts and talents to serve the parish and to live the principles of Catholic social tradition to help those in need.
We share our financial gifts, generously offering our “first fruits” to support the ministries, programs, services, and operations of the parish and the needs of the poor and vulnerable.
We participate in lifelong formation to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ and to deepen our understanding of the Catholic faith, becoming faithful disciples in the world.
We extend genuine hospitality to all, creating a community that supports one another throughout our faith and life journeys.
Members of Saint Pius X are invited to embrace Stewardship as a way of life by fully committing themselves to prayer, service and sacrificial giving.
As members of the Body of Christ, the Church, we are called to further her mission in the world and spread the Gospel in all aspects of life. The fathers of the Second Vatican Council describe this unique calling in Lumen Gentium (The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church):
The laity, however, are given this special vocation: to make the Church present and fruitful in those places and circumstances where it is only through them that she can become the salt of the earth. Thus, every lay person, through those gifts given to him, is at once the witness and the living instrument of the mission of the Church itself "according to the measure of Christ’s bestowal" (Eph. 4:7). (LG 33)
We spread the Gospel through Stewardship, which invites all followers of Jesus Christ to give intentional and proportional gifts of time (prayer), talent (service), and treasure (sacrificial giving) in service of the parish community, which also furthers the mission of the Church.
In gratitude for God’s many blessings, Saint Pius X Parish offers 9 percent of its income to the poor. Of that amount, 4 percent supports our sister parish of Saint Adalbert in South Bend and 1 percent is given to support Palestinian Christians in the Holy Land. The remaining 4 percent is distributed to assist with local, national and international needs of the poor, as recommended by the parish Financial Resources Committee.
Pope Saint Pius X, born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto (1835-1914), was pope from 1903-1914 and canonized St. Pius X on May 29, 1954. A pastoral pope, Pope Pius X encouraged personal holiness, piety and a daily lifestyle reflecting deep Christian values.
At the same time Fr. Sorin was establishing St. Joseph’s Farm in 1867, Fr. Giuseppe Sarto began his labors in the farm country of northern Italy. From these beginnings, he would receive from the Lord a mission as great and far-reaching as the motto he chose when he was later elected to the papacy as Pope Pius X ~ To Renew All Things in Christ.
Pope Saint Pius X’s motto was more than just a catchy phrase. He dedicated his papacy to a renewal of faith for all people, beginning with the publication of the encyclical E Supremi Apostolatus two months after his papal election. In this document, he promised that “the interests of God will be our interests,” and he went about making necessary changes to expand peoples’ practice of their faith and to counter heresy. His most important reforms were to order the codification of Canon Law and lowering the age for reception of First Holy Communion. He was also a staunch defender of the faith and helped promote more frequent reception of the Eucharist for all the faithful.
Saint Pius X’s vision for the universal Church is our vision for the future of our parish. His many lasting contributions to the Church show just how much was “renewed,” and the spirit of his call lives on in our parish as we seek our own renewal today.
Established as a parish in 1951, the roots of Saint Pius X Church go back to 1870, when Fr. Edward Sorin, C.S.C. founded St. Joseph’s Farm in Granger, Indiana. At the farm, Holy Cross brothers, sisters and priests served the needs of Catholics in the rural farming community, while providing fresh food for the nearby University of Notre Dame. In 1924, the first sacramental records were recorded. In 1936, this unofficial body of Catholics became established as the St. Joseph’s Farm Parish.
By 1951, the small chapel at the farm was too small to serve the needs of the growing population. A gift of 5 acres off Fir Road enabled a new church to be built. This new church, dedicated to Saint Pius X, was built by the 145 families it would serve. The parish celebrated its first Mass in the new church in March of 1956.
As the area surrounding Saint Pius X grew, so did the parish. The parish built a new rectory in 1970. In 1982, the parish constructed a parish center and gym. By 1989, the parish had grown to 1,200 families, with new members being added each week. This growth prompted a decision to construct a new church. The former church and connecting offices were completed by Easter 1992, and Bishop John D’Arcy dedicated the new facilities the following September.
Although the Congregation of the Holy Cross had staffed the parish from its beginning, the congregation made a close examination of its mission and the number of priests and handed the parish over to the care of diocesan priests in the summer of 2001. As the parish continued to grow, it became clear that the physical facilities, built for a parish of 1,400 families, were no longer adequate to serve the educational needs of a rapidly growing parish. A successful capital campaign began in 2003, and plans were drawn up to build a Parish Education Center. Bishop D’Arcy gave permission to include a new parochial school as part of the the PEC.
Dedicated in 2008, the PEC was designed with the concept that education in the faith is an ongoing process for those from “cradle to grave.” The PEC provides much-needed space for preschool (more than 120 students), a parochial grade school (more than 540 students), grade school Religious Education Programs (500+ students), adult education series, RCIA, RCIT and RCIC, sacramental preparation programs, sports activities, Christ Renews His Parish weekend retreats and many more opportunities for spiritual growth.
In response to our growing community, the parish began a three-phase facilities expansion project in 2014. With significant financial support, we dedicated our new church on March 25, 2017 to better accommodate our parishioners at Mass. In September 2017, we opened the Parish Life Center, which provides much-needed gathering and meeting space for fellowship and our more than 80 ministries. The final phase, construction of the Parish Education Center addition and the renovation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Wing, was completed in August 2019, allowing us to better accommodate the parish’s faith formation programs.
With a present population of more than 2,900 families (more than 9,000 parishioners), and construction of the facilities expansion complete, the parish continues to implement our five year Strategic Plan (2019-2024) through the efforts of the parish staff, the Parish Pastoral Council, and many other parish leaders. As we look to the future, we are grateful for all those who have worked hard in the past to make Saint Pius X a vibrant parish community.
