When they receive Holy Orders–one of two sacraments of service in the Catholic Church–bishops and priests are able to serve the people of God through teaching, divine worship and pastoral governance in the name and person of Christ.

Deacons are ordained for tasks of service to the Church. Transitional deacons are ordained prior to their final ordination as priests, while permanent deacons remain deacons and do not go on to become priests.
